This Week in Sports
July 29th - August 5th, 2012

For the This Week in Sports article, things are going to be different.  Instead of capping what went on in the world of sports this past week, I will preview what to watch for this coming week.

The first thing to look out for comes from the NFL, as it is officially back.  Training camps have already started opening, and everyone in the NFL will be starting practice by this week.  It seems like just yesterday that the New York Giants and New England Patriots were playing for the Super Bowl, but at the same time it has been long enough since football was on.

The first preseason game will be held Sunday August 5th between the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.  Preseason football can be hard to watch at times, but it means that real football is only right around the corner.

Some things to watch for during training camp are the statuses of some star players that may hold out for portions of camp.  New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis had been indecisive about showing up to camp, but ended up showing and quickly sitting out again because of injury.

Kansas City and Pittsburgh have big named wide receivers in Dwayne Bowe and Mike Wallace that both are seriously considering missing some time of training camp over contract disputes.  Jacksonville Jaguars star running back Maurice Jones-Drew will also be sitting out part of training camp looking for a new contract after leading the NFL in rushing last season.

Another thing to watch for this week is the MLB trade deadline.  With every team breaking the 100 game benchmark for the season, it is becoming a little clearer about which teams are going to be sellers or buyers in the trade market this season.  With the added wild card spot this season for the post season, there will be many more teams that believe they have a shot at making some noise and joining the playoffs.

The Dodgers seem to be the most interested in acquiring Cubs starter Ryan Dempster
There have been some big named players moved already as Zach Greinke was shipped from Milwaukee to the Los Angeles Angels and the Miami Marlins traded Hanley Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The Chicago White Sox were also able to acquire Francisco Liriano from the Minnesota Twins.  The New York Yankees also acquired Ichiro Suzuki from the Seattle Mariners, ending his 10 year tenure in Seattle .

There are still plenty of other players that could get moved even with Houston Street and Carlos Quentin signing extensions with the San Diego Padres.  Look for the Pittsburgh Pirates to try and make a splash even with their recent acquisition of Wandy Rodriguez from the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies to do something.  With the signing of Cole Hamels to a 6 year $144 million contract, the Phillies have to move some salary from their books.

The last thing to look for this week and the week after is the 2012 Summer Olympics.  It is the 30th installment of the Summer Olympics.

One big thing to look forward to is the basketball tournament with the United States being the favorites.  Spain and Argentina are expected to be the most competition for the United States team.

The American women’s soccer team will also look to bounce back after a difficult loss in the championship game of the 2011 FIFA World Cup.

The United States will also bring one of the most anticipated women’s gymnastic teams to London for competition.

Shawn Johnson will not participate in this year's Olympic events
Swimming will also be a prime target for many views, as Michael Phelps returns looking to add seven more medals to his collection.  Rival and fellow American Ryan Lochte will try and best Phelps in the individual races, but will look to dominant alongside him for the relay races.

The next two weeks should give athletes from across the world and across many different sports exposure that cannot be rivaled by any other gathering in the world.
