Michael Pineda out for 2012

The Yankees have announced that Michael Pineda will not pitch this year. The Yankees traded for Pineda prior to the start of the season by sending top hitting prospect Jesus Montero to the Seattle Mariners. There was a lot of press about Pineda not coming into spring training this year in shape, many believed that was the reason for his decrease in velocity. It now turns out the Yankee's top young pitcher had a tear in his labrum. Pineda will undergo surgery to fix his shoulder which will then lead into a 12 month process of rehabilitation, meaning he won't be available to pitch until May 2013 at the earliest. This isn't all bad news for the Yankees because this almost guarantees Andy Pettitte a spot in the rotation when he is in game shape. Last year with the Mariners, Pineda went 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He also had 173 strikeouts in 171 innings. Pineda was drafted, on average, in the 11th or 12th round in your fantasy leagues this year. I fell victim to the injury as I own Pineda in a keeper league of mine. The shoulder issue is a little more concerning as opposed to an elbow injury so if you are an owner of Pineda keep an eye on him throughout the rehab process and just hope he comes into spring training in better shape next season.
