Corey Perry vs. Ilya Kovalchuk

Entering the 2012-2013 season you may have a lot of keeper decisions to make regarding your rosters. For this fantasy breakdown I will look at two of the top 10 forwards in fantasy hockey. Corey Perry of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Ilya Kovalchuk of the New Jersey Devils. Both of these studs had great seasons this year which included 37 goals each. This breakdown will be based solely on statistics and not where you may have drafted them. Obviously if you had drafted Kovalchuk in a round or two lower than Perry the value is much greater because you may not have to give up a high draft pick in return for holding onto Perry. If that is the case in your league's keeper rules then Kovalchuk would be the better pick but if your rules don't include a penalty for keeping players then this breakdown will help aid your decision moving forward.

Corey Perry ANA RW

Perry was drafted on average 5th in most fantasy formats entering the season. Perry did not disappoint this year putting up 37 goals, 23 assists, but did finish with -7 rating this year. He did have somewhat of a down season after his career high 98 points in 2011. Perry was bound for a regression but finishing with 60 points this season was still the top 60. He had a down year in accuracy shooting only 13.4%. If I had to classify Perry entering next year he is a clear case of a proven player coming off a down year. Perry's upside is a top 10 player but expect 2nd round production next year for a player you may get fairly cheap.

Ilya Kovalchuk NJ LW

Kovalchuk had his best season with the Devils this year. He tallied 37 goals, 46 assists, but like Perry had a poor plus/minus rating of -9. An underrated disadvantage Kovalchuk has over Perry is penalty minutes as he had 33 this year opposed to Perry's 127. Kovalchuk had 83 points in 77 games played. Ilya entering the season from a down year in 2010-2011 bounced back with numbers in line with his career averages. He is about as consistent as they come and offers your team a solid foundation to build on.

I feel that, draft value aside, Perry's upside is very attractive but the consistency of Kovalchuk is very undervalued. If I had to choose who to go with entering next year it would be Kovalchuk but if I'm in a keeper league I like the long term value of Perry.
